Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis: A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery Series Book 8

Hello my cozy friends,

Whenever I need a pick me up, or a little escape from the daily grind of life, I love grabbing one of Tonya's books. Her books are always guaranteed to put a smile on my face.

"Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis" is the eighth installment in the "Camper & Criminals" mystery series . I was super happy to return to “Normal, Kentucky” and Happy Trails campground. Every time I read one of these books it makes me want to visit Kentucky and the Daniel Boone National Park. Now we add in the true John Swift Legend and I knew we were in for a good time!

Assailants, Asphalt & Alibis: A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery Series Book 8
by Tonya Kappes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Telling stories around a campfire at Happy Trails Campground is very entertaining to The Laundry Club women until one of the story teller's tall tale about murder and alibis comes true, leaving the story teller MURDERED!

Once again, Mae and the Laundry Club ladies find themselves doing things they never thought they'd do while trying to get clues to who or why someone murdered the tourist. Mae discovers an unheeded warning that will bring the tall tale to life if she can't end the story for good before the killer strikes again.

Its full of personality, humour, non-stop action, and plot twists which keeps you interested till the very end. I thought I had identified the killer early in the book but as I read on there were some red herrings and just when thought I had it all figured out, I had a surprise!

I cant wait for the ninth installment in this series, I highly recommend this to cozy lovers.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

Pride, Prejudice and Poison

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "Pride, Prejudice and Poison" is the first in a "Jane Austin Society mystery" series by Elizabeth Blake.

Pride, Prejudice and Poison by Elizabeth Blake
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Erin Coleridge’s used bookstore in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England is a meeting place for the villagers and, in particular, for the local Jane Austen Society. At the Society’s monthly meeting, matters come to a head between the old guard and its young turks. After the meeting breaks for tea, persuasion gives way to murder—with extreme prejudice—when president Sylvia Pemberthy falls dead to the floor. Poisoned? Presumably…but by whom? And was Sylvia the only target?

Handsome—but shy—Detective Inspector Peter Hadley and charismatic Sergeant Rashid Jarral arrive at the scene. The long suspect list includes Sylvia’s lover Kurt Becker and his tightly wound wife Suzanne. Or, perhaps, the killer was Sylvia’s own cuckolded husband, Jerome. Among the many Society members who may have had her in their sights is dashing Jonathan Alder, who was heard having a royal battle of words with the late president the night before.

Then, when Jonathan Alder narrowly avoids becoming the next victim, Farnsworth (the town’s “cat lady”) persuades a seriously time-crunched Erin to help DI Hadley. But the killer is more devious than anyone imagines.
I had trouble getting into the book, the beginning is introducing us to the little British village of Kirkbymoorside, Jane Austin society. But the constant quoting soon became annoying for me, not sure why but it did. I did find once the murder happened, things began to pick up and the story got more interesting.

The mystery itself was well-plotted and include some good red herrings. It did keep me guessing whodunit till the end. Be nice to see how the relationship Erin and the handsome policeman Peter Hemming develops in future installments.

I will read the next installment as I do believe the series has potential. I recommend to cozy lovers especially those who love Jane Austin.

Wonton Terror: A Noodle Shop Mystery

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "Wonton Terror" by  Vivien Chien the 4th installment in the " A Noodle Shop Mystery" series. I haven't read the previous 3 but I am now looking forward to reading the previous 3 books.
Print Length: 300 pages
Publisher: St. Martin's Paperbacks (Aug. 27 2019)

In the fourth in Vivien Chien's Noodle Shop delicious mystery series, Ho-Lee Noodle House is ready to take the Cleveland night market by storm—until a brand-new food venue literally explodes onto the scene.
Lana Lee is all smiles when the first evening of Cleveland’s Asian Night Market kicks off the summer. The weekly festival is always good for business, packed with locals and tourists, and this year, some stiff new food-truck competition. Wonton on Wheels, run by old friends of Lana’s parents, promises to have customers lining up for their delicately wrapped delights—until the truck blows up at evening’s end.
Lana’s boyfriend, Detective Adam Trudeau, had been planning a birthday getaway for the two of them but, lo and behold, Lana must assume the role of amateur sleuth yet again. With one proprietor of Wonton on Wheels dead, it’s beginning to look more like murder and less like an unfortunate accident. And as they begin to unwrap layers of disturbing secrets, Lana’s own family erupts into new drama. Will Lana be able to solve this crime—or has she jumped from the wok right into the fire?

I really enjoyed this book and the setting of Cleveland, Ohio although a big city it was set in the Asian community.  I always like when I can picture the setting or neighborhood.  Makes for fun and often quirky characters

The Protagonist Lana Lee is well developed.  The side characters such as her a roommate and BFF Megan are likable. We also get introduced to her aunt Grace (sister dynamics through the generations) was realistic.  I have a Asian friend who is a total foodie and I can picture her in the story.  She goes out to eat A LOT  trying different things and like the Lee family her friends and family meet for Dim Sum every week too.

The story was well paced, full of twists and turns. I found I couldn’t put the book down as I wanted to know who the killer was.  It did touch on a sensitive matter "domestic abuse" but it is something that is still out there in today's society sadly.

Highly recommended. A wonderful book from an author I will definitely follow in the future.
When the next installment "Egg Drop Dead" comes out February 2020, I will be sure to add it on my TBR pile.

I requested and received an Advanced Reader Copy on the book from St. Martin's Press and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Death in the Covenant by D.A. Bartley

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "Death in the Covenant" the second book in the "Abish Taylor mystery" series by D.A. Bartley. I have not read " Blessed Be the Wicked" book one but it did not affect reading Death in the Covenant as it can be read as a stand-alone.

Death in the Covenant by D.A. Bartley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the wake of Utah’s stringent laws against plural marriage, the growth of the Mormon Church has slowed. Young men are abandoning the Church, leaving their female counterparts unmarried and childless. Now, the church is about to lose one more member…and it may be due to murder.

Detective Abish “Abbie” Taylor returned to the mountain town of Pleasant View, Utah, hoping for a quiet life. But that hope dissipates like a dream when she wakes to an unsettling phone call. Arriving at the scene of a fatal car accident, she discovers that the victim was one of the most beloved leaders of the Church—and an old family friend.

Abbie is skeptical when her father insists someone murdered his friend, but in an attempt to patch up their relationship, she takes a few days off from her job as the sole detective in the police department, and heads to the Colonia Juárez, a former LDS colony in Mexico. There, she uncovers a plan to “seal” young women to church leaders in temple ceremonies, so the women can give birth and the children can be adopted by Mormon families in the United States. But Abbie knows too well that bringing secrets to light can be deadly. Is that why her father’s friend died?

When she returns to the States, some members of the LDS community certainly don’t seem happy that Abbie knows what she knows. Abbie realizes with a jolt that her investigation could cost her father his job. Who is the murderous mastermind of this secret plot? Is it Port, the young Second Counselor to the President of the Church? Bowen, the charismatic Church spokesperson? Does the “accident” victim’s widow know more than she’s told police? Time is running out for Abbie to save her father’s job—and her own life—as dark forces close in, and the outlook for Pleasant View turns decidedly unpleasant.

Protagonist Abbie, is a strong, educated woman, and the side characters are realistic, like Clarke and Flynn. I felt sorry for her father throughout the story.

I found myself engrossed in the story and reading it over several days. It was entertaining, full of twists and turns as well as a few surprises. I learned a lot about Mormon history, culture and customs. I am fascinated by religion and am always open to learning about different kinds.

Desolate Shores by Daryl Wood Gerber

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am discussing a new thriller "Desolate Shores" by Daryl Wood Gerber. I found it to be so much more than a thriller it was also a suspenseful novel.

Print Length: 239 pages

A chilling murder, an elusive killer, and a family mystery that hits too close to home . . .

After finding the body of her best friend on the icy shores of Lake Tahoe, Aspen Adams refuses to stand by and watch as the local sheriff’s department begins their search for the killer. As fragmentary clues and escalating dangers threaten to derail her, she must also cope with the disturbing behavior of her deadbeat sister and troubled teenage niece.

“Desolate Shores” is the first book in a new suspense series by Daryl Wood Gerber featuring Aspen Adams.

I found myself engrossed in the story and reading it in one sitting.  It was entertaining, suspenseful and full of twists and turns.  I thought all the characters were well developed.  I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

Claws of Action by Linda Reilly

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "Claws of Action" by Linda Reilly the fourth book in the "A Cat Lady Mystery series". I enjoyed this book and have purchased the previous three books so I can start at the beginning and be all caught up.

Claws of Action by Linda Reilly
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The only thing that could make the High Cliff Shelter for Cats even cozier is a reading room where kids can snuggle up with a furry feline and a book. But as Lara and Aunt Fran prepare for the reading nook’s official opening, the health inspector in their New Hampshire town, Evonda Fray, decrees that the shelter qualifies as a “cat café,” thanks to the free snacks it serves to visitors—and that it must be shut down.

When Evonda’s body is found in her car clutching a copy of the cease-and-desist order, suspicion naturally falls on Lara and Aunt Fran. But there’s a whole litter of potential culprits, including a tenant in one of Evonda’s buildings who’d been ordered to give up his rescue cat, a disgruntled daughter-in-law, and more. Now Lara—with some help from her aunt and her spirit cat, Blue—has to pin the tail on the right suspect …

Even though I haven't read the previous books in this series, it didn't cause a problem as this can be read as a stand-alone. I think this will be one of my favorite cat mystery series.

I like the Protagonist Lara who runs a cat shelter in her home, and once again is at the center of a murder. The characters are well developed and very likable, such as her Aunt Fran and Blue a rag-doll cat that only Lara can see who provides hints in the direction that Lara should investigate plus who doesn't love a cats.

There are plenty of twists and turns to keep me wanting to find out what will happen next. The book is engaging from start to finish, grabbing you from the very beginning. I cant wait for the fifth installment in this series, I recommend this to cozy lovers.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington Books - Lyrical Underground and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

The Electrifying Story of Multiple Sclerosis

Hello my friends,

Today I am reviewing "The Electrifying Story of Multiple Sclerosis" by Vanita Oelschlager which is a good book for people to read if they have a family member or friend with Multiple Sclerosis .The book is easy to understand and is informative.

The Electrifying Story of Multiple Sclerosis by Vanita Oelschlager
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have had Multiple Sclerosis for 12 years now and there are still friends/people that do not understand what's it like to live with something intangible, cant be seen, felt, or touched. Constantly I am told but you don’t look sick...

Because Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that someone will live with for years, or even decades, it is important for family and friends to understand what the person is going through and learn how to give support.

Multiple Sclerosis used to be feared because it was so unpredictable and doctors knew very little in how to treat it. Thanks to good research and great doctors, people can live with MS even though there is not a cure yet. The Electrifying Story of Multiple Sclerosis is written to help people understand what it feels like to have the disease and how to help.

The Beekeeper's Cottage by Emma Davies

Hello my friends,

Today I am reviewing "The Beekeeper's Cottage" by Emma Davies is the perfect summer read. This book is the sequel to "The House at Hope Corner" but it can be read as a standalone book easily..

The Beekeeper's Cottage by Emma Davies
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Comforted by the gentle hum of the beehives at the bottom of the garden, Grace drains the last of her tea and walks slowly back towards the little hillside house she adores. Her marriage is over, but is it too late to start her life again?

Beekeeper Grace thought throwing out her cheating husband would be the hardest thing she ever did. But when she opens the door to a property developer one morning, it’s clear that keeping her beautiful home and garden – her only sanctuary throughout her miserable marriage – will be the greatest challenge of all…

Fleeing to her best friend at the farm next door, Grace blurts out all her problems, only to be overheard by Amos, a handsome, free-spirited visitor with a twinkle in his eye. Fascinated by Grace and her bees, Amos offers to stay in the village of Hope Corner, to help turn her home into a guest house in return for lessons on beekeeping.

As Grace shows Amos how to nurture a hive and harvest honeycomb without getting stung, he is charming but secretive. He never stays long in the same place after an incident in his past involving a mysterious woman named Maria. But as their eyes lock over a jar of homemade honey, Grace can’t help feeling that she’d really like him to stay…

Determined to dispel her growing suspicion that Amos is running from something serious, Grace goes in search of the truth about Maria. But when she finds it, will she still want Amos to put down roots in Hope Corner, and will they still have a house to return to?

No matter how far they travel, bees will always find their way home…
This is a light easy read for a lazy summer day. I instantly fell in love with the village of Hope Corner. The characters are wonderful which makes reading even more pleasurable.
I highly recommend this novel to all who love Romance/Chic Lit novels.

Buried in the Stacks by Allison Brook

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "Buried in the Stacks" (The Haunted Library Mysteries #3) by Allison Brook.  I read lots of books over the last few weeks trying to catch up on all the ARC's I picked.  We drove to Vernon this last weekend and I had 7 hours both ways to read so was able to read almost 3!

Publisher: Crooked Lane Books (Sept. 10 2019)

Librarian Carrie Singleton is building a haven, but one of her neighbors is misbehavin'. Can resident spirit Evelyn help Carrie catch the culprit who made her a ghost?

In winter, the Haunted Library is a refuge for homeless townspeople. When a group purchases a vacant house to establish a daytime haven for the homeless, Carrie offers the library as a meeting place for the Haven House committee, but quickly learns that it may be used for illegal activities.

As the new Sunshine Delegate, Carrie heads to the hospital to visit her cantankerous colleague, Dorothy, who had fallen outside the local supermarket. She tells Carrie that her husband tried to kill her--and that he murdered her Aunt Evelyn, the library's resident ghost, six years earlier.

And then Dorothy is murdered--run off the road as soon as she returns to work. Evelyn implores Carrie to find her niece's killer, but that's no easy task: Dorothy had made a hobby of blackmailing her neighbors and colleagues. Carrie, Evelyn, and Smoky Joe the cat are on the case, but are the library cards stacked against them?

I have not read the previous two books in the series but I did not have any trouble following along as the author did a wonderful job of retelling things without overloading you with the past books.  She also dealt with some pretty uncomfortable/sad issues in society today like swindlers, homelessness, Alzheimer's care, and dealing with unpleasant judgmental people.

The protagonist Carrie is one of the librarians and Evelyn (ghost) was also before her untimely death.
The mystery is interesting and well plotted, and I loved the characters which are well developed. I also loved the inclusion of the library cat, Smokey Joe into the story.

There are plenty of twists and turns in this story, and I kept guessing and second-guessing myself on whodunnit right to the very end. The story moves at a steady pace, and I had a hard time putting it down.

I recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends, and plan on buying the first two books.
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Allison Brook is a Pseudonym for Marilyn Levinson.

"I was a bookworm from the moment I learned how to read. I devoured Nancy Drews, Judy Boltons, and Trixie Beldons – sometimes two books in one day. Was it any wonder I ended up writing mysteries?

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, I dreamed of becoming a ballerina or a writer. I practiced my pirouettes and penned short stories. My family moved to Long Island, where I continued to write stories until I was discouraged by a high school English teacher.

Turned off to writing, I continued to read voraciously in college and concentrated on my major, Spanish. I studied in Mexico and Spain, intent on becoming fluent in the language. I taught high school Spanish, married my dentist husband, and we started a family. When our two sons were small, I found myself drawn back to writing fiction.

A writer is a writer forever. We may have more than our share of disappointments, but the rewards are many – knowing you bring joy to readers; sharing the camaraderie and support of your fellow scribes. Writing is a way of life, one I wouldn’t relinquish for anything."

Feel Better, Mommy by Risa Kirschner

Hello my friends,

Today I am reviewing “Feel Better, Mommy” by Risa Kirschner is a beautiful book with a simple and loving message that hopefully makes a situation like illness or hospital visits a little bit easier.

Feel Better, Mommy by Risa Kirschner
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Abby’s mom has a boo boo, so her Nana takes her to the hospital to visit. Follow Abby’s adventures as she finds a magical bed that moves, takes her teddy on a wheelchair ride, and learns that spending time with her mom can make a hospital feel like home. Based on the real experiences of the author’s then two-year-old daughter, this sweet story teaches that hospitals are safe places for healing and that parents always love their children, even if they have to spend time away from home.
This is a great subject to address for young children who have someone they love in the hospital, as it helps them to cope and understand that the hospital is not a scary place to visit. (My dad worked in a hospital so it was familiar to me but to other kids I knew they were afraid) I think it would be great to have to prepare a young child for their first visit to a hospital. The mother’s illness is general in description, as it only mentions an IV and an x-ray, but you do visit some of the other patient’s rooms to give an idea of some of the reasons people are in the hospital.

This would be a wonderful book to be placed in the Children’s hospital, doctor’s offices, anywhere where a child may be dealing with the subject. My friend takes in emergency foster babies and they are in and out of the hospital , I am definitely going to get for her to read to the kids. I would definitely recommend this book!

Let's Fake a Deal by Sherry Harris

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am discussing "Let's Fake a Deal" by Sherry Harris in the "Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mystery" series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have purchased the previous books.

 Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Kensington (July 30 2019)

SHE’S GOT THE GOODS . . .
As a former military spouse, Sarah Winston’s learned a little about organizing, packing, and moving. Her latest project sounds promising: a couple of tech-industry hipsters, newly arrived in her Massachusetts town, who need to downsize. Unfortunately, when Sarah tries to sell their stuff, she discovers it’s all stolen—and she’s the unwitting fence.

BUT SARAH’S PROBLEMS ARE JUST BEGINNING
Michelle, an old friend of Sarah’s from the Air Force base, is in line for a promotion—but not everyone is happy about it, and she’s been hit with an anonymous discrimination complaint. When one of the men she suspects is behind the accusations turns up dead in Michelle’s car, Sarah needs to clear Michelle’s name—as well as her own for selling hot merchandise. And she’ll have to do it while also organizing a cat lady’s gigantic collection of feline memorabilia, or they’ll be making room for Sarah in a jail cell . . .
Even though this is the first book I have read in the series I was able to follow along easily so it can be read as a stand alone.  I really enjoyed it and practically read in one sitting and have since purchased the other books in the series.

The protagonist Sarah Winston is a strong, independent woman. The characters are well rounded and seem real as I could relate to each of them. The town of Ellington, Massachusetts is interesting.

There were enough twists to keep me intrigued and wanting to know how it ends. The plot and story were good and seemed to flow at a good pace. This has been added to my favourite series pile.

I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a cozy filled with warm, diverse characters and a small town atmosphere.

I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington Books and NetGalley.  All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.

The Dog Who Knew Too Much by Krista Davis

Hello my cozy friends, Today I am reviewing "The Dog Who Knew Too Much” the 6th instalment in the "Paws and Claws” Mystery series ...
