The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives by Jenny Kane

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives” the first instalment in
The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives Mystery series by Jenny Kane set in Mousehole is a picturesque fishing village in Cornwall, England.  What a great start to a new series.

Don't miss this brand-new cozy crime mystery series, perfect for fans of Clare Chase and Peter Boland - available to pre-order now!

There's some fishy business happening in the idyllic Cornish village of Mousehole. As a killer begins to make waves, can these new amateur detectives solve the mystery?

Maggie Tyson loves living in the utterly charming village, Mousehole. She spends her days walking the local coastal paths, solving the latest crossword puzzle, and working in the small town's only fish and chip shop.

Looking for a fresh start, Ryan Stepney is in desperate need of a job, and stumbles across a vacancy at the chip shop.

When a body is found by the harbour, shock ripples through the village. And as Ryan was the last person seen talking to the victim, he becomes the number one suspect in the investigation.

Maggie is certain that her new colleague had nothing to do with the murder, so swaps her apron for a magnifying glass, and starts to investigate herself.

Can Maggie prove Ryan's innocence and reel in the killer, before they strike again?

The Fish and Chip Shop Detectives
Forty-eight-year-old Maggie is a lover of puzzles. When she's not working at Robbins' Fish and Chip Shop, she can be found on her sofa, nursing a cup of tea and solving the latest mystery thrown at the detectives in Death in Paradise, Midsommer Murders and more. Maggie finds an unlikely friend in Ryan, a recent graduate who has just moved to Mousehole and is trying to figure out what to do with his life. Together, they serve up the best fish and chips Cornwall has to offer, with an occasional helping of mystery solving on the side.

The Setting
Mousehole is a picturesque fishing village in Cornwall, known for its scenic harbour, winding streets, and tiny sandy beach. It's also home to Robbins' Fish and Chip Shop, the only chippy in town. Tourists and locals alike enjoy a battered cod whilst admiring the calm waterfront. Mr Robbins, the owner, is notoriously private - no one knows much about him. Perhaps that's another mystery for our Fish and Chip Shop Detectives to solve...

This is a new to me author and I will definitely be reading more from her.   I love the story and the I enjoyed the bond between Maggie and Ryan, they were witty, and authentic.

The mystery is interesting and well plotted, and had plenty of twists to keep engaged right to the very end. I kept guessing and second-guessing myself but I was right on who the killer was.

Overall, this book is a must-read for fans of cozy mysteries and heartwarming fiction. Jenny’s writing is engaging, and her characters are lovable and well-crafted. I highly recommend this charming novel and look forward to the next instalment.

The Barn Identity by Diane Kelly

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing “The Barn Identity” the 8th instalment in the House Flipper Mysteries series by Diane Kelly.
The eighth in the House-Flipper mystery series set in Nashville, where the real estate market is to die for.

In Nashville, carpenter Whitney Whitaker is ecstatic when she discovers an abandoned barn perfect for her next project. However, since the surrounding former farmland has now developed into a shiny new shopping center, it seems the decrepit antebellum barn that once served as a livery stable should be torn down to make way for something more modern. Even so, Whitney can’t help but think the barn should be preserved. While unproven, it’s rumored the building once served as a hiding place for escaped slaves as part of the Underground Railroad. She convinces her cousin to take a chance on the old property. After all, the barn would make a unique retail space or, with its high ceilings and wide walls, could be turned into an arthouse cinema.

When a local print journalist reporting on the renovation is found dead on the property, investigators suspect he might have been murdered for any one of several exposĂ©s he’d published about local politicians, movers, and shakers. Whitney suspects there’s more to the story, and that the journalist’s fate might be tied directly to the stable renovation. Can she solve the murder and bring a killer to justice? Or might this goal be too lofty?
The characters of Whitney, Sawdust (cat), Buck, Collin and Collette are ones I have really come to love. I also enjoy the setting of Nashville, Tennessee. I like how the series continues to alternate chapters narrated by Whitney and her cat Sawdust.

This time around a pregnant Whitney and Buck are remodelling an old livery stable/barn with history that it once served as a hiding place for escaped slaves as part of the Underground Railroad. When a reporter who was doing a story on the renovation and history of the barn is found dead, Whitney decides to investigate.

The mystery is interesting and had lots of twists which kept me guessing. I did suspect who the killer was just before Whitney did.

I highly recommend to all my cozy mystery loving friends.

Death at a Firefly Tea by Laura Childs

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing “Death at a Firefly Tea” the 30th instalment in the A Tea Shop Mystery series by Laura Childs. I absolutely love this series!
A brazen killer sparks Theodosia Browning’s sense of justice in this latest installment of the New York Times bestselling series.

As fireflies dazzle like tiny glowing lanterns, tea maven Theodosia hosts an elegant evening tea on the patio of the Tangled Rose B and B. But in this gentle darkness an intruder has made their way in and slipped deadly drugs into the baked Alaska of Mrs. Van Courtland, one of Charleston’s local grande dames. Shocked by this brazen act, urged on by Mrs. V’s grieving son, Theodosia begins her own shadow investigation. Soon, she finds herself at odds with a greedy developer, the questionable residents of Honey Badger House, a vengeful ex-daughter-in-law, ne’er do well relatives, and a housekeeper who knows all the secrets. As Theodosia hosts a Moulin Rouge Tea and a Queen Victoria Tea, her tea sommelier Drayton is assaulted by a masked stranger and the fiancĂ© of Mrs. V’s son is kidnapped. It’s only at the Starry Starry Night black tie ball that Theodosia stumbles upon the killer and gets pulled into a dramatic life and death chase.

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES AND TEA TIME TIPS!
The story grabbed me from the beginning as we start off at Theo’s Firefly Tea where things go from good to bad quite quickly. I love protagonist Theo, the Indigo Tea Shop,  Drayton, and Haley and we can’t forget Earl Grey!

As for the mystery itself I found it entertaining and well thought out.  The Starry Starry Night black-tie ball is a thrilling finale that combines glamour and suspense, leading to an exciting car chase that's both surprising and satisfying. This cozy mystery expertly blends warmth, wit, and danger, keeping its charming tone intact – a treat for fans of this genre!

Make sure you have a hot cup of tea and a snack when reading as I’m always hungry when I hear Haley’s menus! Good thing there are recipes from the tea shop at the end of the book.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends.

Beatrice Ophelia is Flickering Out by Megan Gerig

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing “Beatrice Ophelia is Flickering Out” by Megan Gerig the first instalment in the Lake Erie Mysteries. What a great start to a new series, I enjoyed this book and look forward to book 2.
Beatrice Sawyer is flickering out, for what might be the last time.

After being laid off yet again, Beatrice returns with her family to her childhood summer home to unwind. And maybe figure out how to move out of her parents’ basement. The town is hosting their inaugural Smallmouth Bass Festival as a last-wick effort to attract tourists, and Beatrice hopes volunteering might shed some light on her future.

At first, things seem to be brightening. Beatrice rediscovers the candle shop her grandmother once owned, and a new dream sparks to life.

Until she stumbles upon her estranged aunt dragging away the marina owner’s body.

When her grandfather insists on his daughter’s innocence, Beatrice must shelve her newfound dream and team up with her brother and childhood best friend to clear her aunt’s name. But as they dig deeper, Beatrice wonders whether their efforts will mend their family ties—or if she’ll fail to save her aunt and have to watch her family go up in smoke.

I did struggle a bit with the pace of the book but it still didn’t stop me reading it in one day.  I totally understood how Beatrice felt not knowing what she wanted to do in life, I still struggle to this day at age 60. So with that respect I could really relate to her character, there was family drama and emotions to unpack and overall I found it to be a good story.

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I did guess whodunnit but that did not distract from the story.  I’m sure in the next book character development and plot will improve and I won’t be able to guess.

I recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 2 to come out!

Murder in a Cornish Teashop by Fliss Chester

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "Murder in a Cornish Teashop”  by Fliss Chester  the first instalment
of The Maddie Penrose mystery series  set in the in the .  What a great start to a new series.

A Cornish clifftop, a sunny afternoon, a quaint little teashop… but wait a minute. Is that jam, or blood? Maddie Penrose is determined to find out!

Maddie Penrose is staying with her beloved grandmother, Nor, at her gorgeously idyllic Cornish farm. She’s looking forward to days helping out in Nor’s little teashop and evenings wandering down the cliff path to watch the sunset. But before Maddie has even finished serving up scones on her first morning, a man bursts through the door: Nor’s neighbour Clive has found a body in the field behind the teashop…

Maddie is straight to the scene, fancying herself as a bit of an Agatha Christie. But solving this mystery is far from a piece of cake. Her list of suspects is jam-packed with locals, with some a little too close to home: the newcomer renting out one of Nor’s barns is acting suspiciously, the victim’s boyfriend has disappeared without trace, and Clive isn’t really Maddie’s cup of tea either…

But the proof is in the pudding when there’s another murder – her prime suspect is dead. And when Maddie finds a backpack belonging to the first murder victim, her diligent notetaking and quick thinking leads her to discover that the killer will act again, and soon. Maddie is horrified to discover that it looks like she is their next target…

Can Maddie and Nor work as a team to piece together the puzzle? Or will murdering Maddie be the icing on the cake for the killer?

A totally addictive, witty and warm cozy mystery that will keep you reading late into the night, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey and Verity Bright.

Author Fliss Chester is a new to me author but I had heard this was a good cozy mystery.   This story follows Maddie Penrose, who is taking a break from her hectic life as a chef in London and escaped to her Grans farm and Teashop in the quaint town of Pendragon Creek, Cornwall.

But before Maddie has even finished serving up scones on her first morning, a man bursts through the door: Nor’s neighbour Clive has found a body in the field behind the teashop…

Can Maddie and Nor work as a team to piece together the puzzle? Or will murdering Maddie be the icing on the cake for the killer?

I enjoyed Fliss Chester’s writing style and the charming Cornwall setting. This was a quick, engaging read, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the series develops.

Recommended for fans of cozy mysteries, British settings, and amateur sleuths

A Summertime Murder by Mary Grand

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing “A Summertime Murder” by Mary Grand the 5th instalment in the "The Isle of Wight Killings" series.  I enjoyed this book it’s a slow burn, entertaining mystery.

Susan never imagined herself an amateur sleuth, and she certainly never goes looking for trouble, preferring days spent walking her loyal dogs Libs and Rocco, and maybe even a dip in the sea to cool off after this interminable heatwave.

When she hears of a break-in at the vet’s where her new neighbour works, Susan’s curiosity is piqued.

And then, a few days later, the lead vet, Peter, mysteriously disappears. They assume it's business related until his body is washed up on the beach close to his clifftop home.

Susan is convinced he was murdered and slowly discovers that each of the small group of suspects has a motive. Is the killing linked to the break-in… or is this a crime of passion?

Once again, Susan finds herself piecing together clues in her search for the truth. Can she untangle the lies before someone else dies?

Return to the beautiful coastline of the Isle of Wight in this engrossing and unputdownable cosy mystery!

Once again, Susan finds herself piecing together clues in her search for the truth. Can she untangle the lies before someone else dies?

The mystery is expertly crafted, with just the right number of suspects to keep you guessing. The twists and turns are plentiful, and I didn't see the culprit coming.

Susan is a relatable protagonist who's had to start over after her husband left her. She's built a new life, made friends, and discovered a talent for solving mysteries. Her character growth in this story is compelling, and I appreciate that she's not static – she's complex and multi-dimensional.

I am sad that there won’t be anymore in the series, but look forward to Mary’s next book.

The Potting Shed Murder by Paula Sutton

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "The Potting Shed Murder ” the first instalment in A Hill House Vintage Murder Mystery series by Paula Sutton set in Pudding Corner, a Norfolk hamlet full of quintessentially English charm.

From the creator of Hill House Vintage and “Queen of Cottagecore” (Vogue), a fresh, witty, fun, and delightfully quirky cozy crime novel set in a seemingly sleepy English village for fans of Richard Osman, Parini Shroff, Benjamin Stevenson, and Anthony Horowitz.

“Miss Marple for the 21st Century.” ―S.J. Bennett, author of The Windsor Knot

Welcome to the beautiful, bucolic village of Pudding Corner, where there's death amongst the dahlias . . .

Daphne Brewster has gladly swapped south London for Pudding Corner, a Norfolk hamlet full of quintessentially English charm. With a mix of stone cottages, Georgian architecture, and Victorian Gothic houses all nestled together and surrounded by fields of gold and green, Pudding Corner and its neighboring village of Pepperbridge seem as far from the bustle of city living as one can get.

For Daphne, joy at moving into beautiful Cranberry Farmhouse with her husband, James, and their three young children is tempered by some concerns about being the only Black woman for miles around. But within a few short months, Daphne has become known as the parish’s “Vintage Lady” and has set up her own shop. Business is thriving, and so is her family. As for Pudding Corner, it’s rapidly revealing itself to be filled with complicated, intertwined lives on par with anything she left behind. Then the local school’s headmaster is found dead in his allotment patch, unleashing a storm of secrets and scandal.

Even a sleepy village has its social hierarchy, and as her new friend, Minerva, becomes a target of whispers and speculation, Daphne can’t resist getting involved. Fighting for the underdog comes as naturally as sourcing the perfect vintage piece. But there is more at stake here than Daphne could have guessed, and a killer who has succeeded once is all too willing to try again . . .

The Bark Before the Dawn by Sarah Fox

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing “ The Bark Before the Dawn” by Sarah Fox  the 4th instalment in the "Magical Menagerie Mystery series”.  Sarah’s books are an automatic preorder even without reading the blurb on what the book is about, I just love her writing style.  I’m hoping there will be more of her other series in 2026.  (Sweet Confections series, Literary Pub Mystery series as well as the Wyatt Investigations Mystery series)

Murder, magic, and a touch of romance. Return to the charming coastal town of Twilight Cove with the latest installment in USA Today bestselling author Sarah Fox's enchanting Magical Menagerie Mystery series!

Ever get the feeling you’re being watched?

Arriving home to her beloved farmhouse after a successful trip with her boyfriend, Callum, Georgie Johansen feels utterly contented. Until she discovers a dark figure watching her from the bushes!

A prowler on your property is creepy enough to warrant a call to the police, right? But when Georgie’s ID matches that of a body discovered the next day at Twilight Cove’s Seabreeze Motel, things take a bizarre turn. Especially when Georgie realizes she met the murder victim at the airport in Florida.

Why did the mysterious woman follow them all the way to Oregon? Why was she at the farm? And what could she possibly have done that led to her death?

Georgie—along with magical pups Flossie and Fancy—makes it her mission to uncover the truth. And time is of the essence as a second prowler stares through her window . . .

This delightful cozy mystery series with paranormal pooches is perfect for fans of Sofie Kelly, Amanda Flowers, Wendy Corsi Staub, and Gretchen Rue!

I loved it!  I really enjoyed visiting Twilight Cove, Oregon and the animal sanctuary again. This time someone is prowling around the farmhouse and following Georgie, (what a creepy feeling that must be )

Sarah is very good at descriptive writing so you feel like you’re right there walking amongst the woods, on the beach or walking main street and seeing the picturesque stores.  I know I would love to live there and be part of Georgie’s friend group.

Who wouldn’t want to hang out with two magical dogs named  Fancy and Flossie, a kitten named Stardust, a great horned owl named Euclid, and all the Sanctuary animals.  Another thing I enjoy is where Georgie and Callum’s relationship is heading.

The story was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I didn’t completely guess whodunnit until Georgie did.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 5 to come out!

The Whisking Hour by Ellie Alexander

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing "The Whisking Hour" the 22nd instalment in the A Bakeshop Mystery series by Ellie Alexander.
Another delicious installment in Ellie Alexander's Bakeshop Mysteries set in Ashland, OR!

Fall is in full flush in the charming hamlet of Ashland, Oregon, and baker Juliet Capshaw is excited to celebrate the season with a night at the theatre. Lance Rousseau, Ashland’s renowned theater director and one of Jules’ closest friends, has put his own spin on a production of the Broadway classic Perfect Crime, drawing the audience into a cozy New York apartment as a nefarious set of suspects pulls off the perfect murder. As the final show approaches, Jules and the team at Torte are eagerly whipping up a murderous feast for the cast party, baking a bevy of treats like panna cotta eyeballs with blood orange coulis, deviled eggs, and savory cheese fingers with pumpkin dipping sauce.

On the day of the soirĂ©e, life seems to imitate art when a storm rolls over the Siskiyou Mountains, ushering in gusty winds and unrelenting rain. The audience buzzes with electric energy as the lights flicker and the actors take the stage. After the actors take their final bow, the cast trickles into Carpenter Hall, ready for a night of frivolity. But when an actor is discovered dead in his dressing room, Jules wonders if she’s just witnessed the real perfect murder.

This time around we are back in Ashland and a very pregnant Jules is looking forward to a night at the theatre. A production of the Broadway classic Perfect Crime, drawing the audience into a cozy New York apartment as a nefarious set of suspects pulls off the perfect murder.  But when an actor is discovered dead in his dressing room, Jules wonders if she’s just witnessed the real perfect murder.

really enjoyed this story, seeing how the Torte family is adapting to Jules having twins, new staff and how the business is expanding its horizons.  The mystery is interesting and well plotted, and there were just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Needless to say I cant wait for the next book in the series.

I recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends.

The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor by Lucy Connelly

Hello my cozy friends,

Today I am reviewing “The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor ” by Lucy Connelly the 1st instalment in the " A Welsh Village Mystery" series. I enjoyed this book and think it’s a great start to a new series.  I’ve enjoyed Lucy Connelly’s Scottish Isle Mysteries so was excited to see another series by her but set in Wales.
A new job can be killer in this series debut mystery set in Wales, perfect for fans of Sheila Connolly and Paige Shelton.

After crossing the pond, Dr. Gwen Griffith finds herself in the quirky place she fell in love with, Dillynaidd, Wales. A former managing editor for a Texan newspaper, Gwen is ready for the next stage in her life as the head of the journalism department at the local university in town. With her best friend, Carolyn Sparks–who is also the university’s dean–at her side, Dillynaidd feels like a dream, until murder comes knocking at her doorstep.

Gwen had only just met the victim, Dr. Alice Rice, at a faculty party, but that doesn't stop police detective Gareth Jones from suspecting her of foul play–after all, the victim was found on her doorstep. With her journalism background, Gwen decides that it’s up to her to clear her own name. But she’ll need all the help she can get when her idyllic small-town life is turned upside down in order to stay one step ahead of the killer.

This brand-new series by Lucy Connelly, author of the Scottish Isle mysteries, will charm cozy mystery readers everywhere.
I really enjoyed visiting Dillynaidd, Wales from the high street,  to the University and surrounding countryside. Another thing I enjoyed was the relationship between Gwen and her bff Dean Carolyn Sparks, plus the people who remembered Gwen from her university days.

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I didn’t completely guess whodunnit until Gwen did.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 2 to come out!
